Quoi planter dans son jardin?

As soon as the good weather returns, spring fever takes hold of gardeners. Whether you’re an expert or an apprentice, you’re probably already planning what you’d like to plant this year. Flowers, herbs or seeds: the choice is almost endless, and major home improvement centers such as Rona, Réno-Dépôt or Canadian Tire offer a very large selection. Let yourself be inspired by new varieties and have fun!

Seedlings for the lazy

Don’t have the time or inclination to start your seedlings indoors this year? No problem! Several varieties of vegetables can be sown directly outside while the ground is still frozen. Yes, even if there is still a little snow, certain vegetables like radishes, spinach and peas like cool climates and are frost resistant. Then continue with root vegetables like beets, carrots, turnips and potatoes.

Edible flowers

It’s the big gardening trend of the moment. Grow one of the many edible flower varieties to make your plates spectacular as well as embellishing your garden. Violets, nasturtiums, pansies, lilacs and chive flowers are among the most popular. Cut the flowers at the last minute and garnish your salads, cocktails and desserts. To prolong the pleasure, place the flowers in ice cube trays and then keep them in the freezer until it’s time to serve.

Aromatic herbs

What would summer be without fresh herbs! To flavor your dishes or make delicious infusions, herbs offer you a world of flavors and aromas. Mint is a firm favorite that you can use in many ways. In salads and smoothies for a fresh kick or as an infusion to aid digestion. Warning: mint is an invasive herb. A tip: plant the pot directly in the ground to restrict the plant from rooting.

For a relaxing herbal tea, verbena and chamomile are two herbs of choice. Chamomile produces pretty little flowers that will embellish your garden. The tea is prepared from the dried flowers. Tarragon, on the other hand, is fantastic for enhancing mayonnaise or a glass of lemonade. Lemon grass, meanwhile, will add a wonderful flavor to your oriental dishes. Harvest the stalks throughout the summer. In the fall, harvest all the stalks and freeze them to enjoy during the winter.

Mosquito repellents

With the joys of summer also come certain inconveniences such as the presence of mosquitoes when we try to peacefully enjoy our terrace on a beautiful summer evening. Did you know that certain plants and herbs can keep them away naturally? Among the best repellent plants are lavender, geranium, lemon balm, lemongrass and basil. Have a good summer!
