50 years of style!

50 ans de style !

To mark the 50th anniversary of the Rivière-du-Loup shopping center, Marie-Hélène Proulx, personal stylist, takes us back in time, reminding us of the major fashion trends that have marked each of these decades! Discover those that have come back over the years… or not!

1970

With the hippie movement and the emergence of a range of musical styles, fashion is unique and diverse. Floral (flower power!) or psychedelic prints, sequins, fringes and “peace and love” messages printed on T-shirts are all part of the trendy styles.

The famous flared trousers, long flowing bohemian skirts, platform shoes, headbands and flowers in the hair are essential items in the seventies wardrobe.

The look of the Swedish group ABBA is imitated by the whole generation.

1980

Eighties fashion is all about maximalist style, fluorescent colors, lycra and boldness! Extravagant and dazzling patterns, acid shades, color blocking and hyper-structured cuts are in the spotlight!

XXL shoulder pads, oversized plastic jewelry, bodysuits and leggings are proving to be must-haves in the fashion wardrobe. We are abandoning the demure look and taking advantage of ostentatious and flamboyant outfits (the complete opposite of “quiet luxury”!)

1990

It’s a decade in which opposites attract! Minimalist style and neat simplicity are in vogue with the undeniable popularity of Beverly Hills 90210 and Friends: jeans, a basic T-shirt, a scrunchy in your hair and you’re done! Brands such as Calvin Klein, Gap, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger are at the top of their game. The grunge movement also inspires young people’s looks thanks to Nirvana: Dr. Martens, a scruffy look, ripped clothes and checked shirts are the key items of the trend.

Completely the opposite, we find the ultra girly and sophisticated outfits popularized by the flagship group of the 90s: the Spice Girls as well as Britney Spears, propelled to stardom at the end of the decade.

2000

The fashion of the 2000s is sometimes ridiculed, even disowned. Sexy and borderline vulgar, trends range from questionable mix’n’match to the naked body.

Ultra low waists that reveal the “thong”, dresses worn over jeans, t-shirts layered over long-sleeved sweaters, cropped trousers folded halfway up the calf, the craze for Chinese letters and tribal patterns are among the trends that many would like to forget!

Logos are very prominent: Von Dutch, Juicy Couture, Guess and Miss Sixty are having their moment of glory. The look of Christina Aguilera, Paris Hilton and Destiny’s Child is being imitated with micro-pieces, sequins, strapless or asymmetrical tube tops, small handbag-style bags, chain belts and choker necklaces. Tight-fitting and sparkling remain the constants. The quote “less is more” is clearly not part of the vocabulary of the 2000s. Nevertheless, several young fashionistas are now inspired by the beginning of the millennium in their current look. Y2K (year 2000) is a movement that brings back the major trends of the decade as well as the popular culture of the time! This nostalgia allows leading brands to make a comeback by offering renewed versions of the legendary items from over 20 years ago… Crop tops, wide and cargo pants, does that ring a bell in 2024?

2010

With the arrival of Instagram in 2010, fashion became an image creation factory propelled into a frantic race for likes and followers. Nowadays, it is the influencers who inspire: micro-trends follow one another in quick succession, fading away just as quickly. Indeed, the viral nature of social networks can allow a trend to spread rapidly by reaching a wide audience, which necessarily disrupts the industry, forcing it to adapt in a flash. The massive sharing of OOTDs (outfit of the day/look of the day) is a good example of this. Street wear, cool and casual luxury and comfort are paramount. High waists are making a comeback, while jeggings and skinny jeans are at the height of their popularity. Fashion no longer has a gender; it is inclusive and distinction is no longer relevant. Maximalism and the layering, even the accumulation, of several pieces have also been made popular by the Gossip Girls series. In any case, even if we thought that the 2010s were to be consigned to oblivion, I would remind you that fashion is an eternal cycle. The grand return of ballet flats, XXL hoodies, Crocs and Uggs is proof of this right now!
